Rang 5 participated in the Intel Mini Scientist 2019. This project enabled the students to explore science through project based learning. The project was both challenging and interesting. Organisational, cooperative, investigative and evaluative skills were put to test. The students prepared projects on planets, earthworms, a compost oven, solar panels, light in a Lego house, fingerprints, a ripeness detector, Orbeez, the best washing powder and hot air balloons. An Intel judge came to view these projects on Tuesday. She spent an hour and a half listening to and questioning the students about their work. She was greatly impressed with the effort Rang 5 put into their presentations. She selected two projects to go on to regional finals in early December which take place at the Technological University Dublin. ‘How do Orbeez work?’ by Donagh, Senan and Senan and ‘How do Solar Panels work?’ by Croíagh, Éabha and Leah were the winning projects. Congratulations to all Rang 5 students and Múinteoir Ailbhe for the excellent scientific work.
